New Paltz routs defending champ Marlboro

This is what they call a game changer or, more appropriat­ely, a division changer.

New Paltz High claimed sole possession of first place in Section 9, Class B Division-I football with a dominant 34-7 triumph over five-time defending champion Marlboro.

Kenny and Jimmy Verney each ran for four touchdowns to lead the Huguenots, who improved their record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the division. Marlboro is now 2-1 division and 4-2 overall.

It is the first time New Paltz has beaten the Dukes since the 2010 Class B title game.

Kenny Verney, behind a solid performanc­e from the offensive line, rambled for 114 yards. He scored on a 2-yard run and, off a Marlboro fumble, Jimmy raced 10 yards for a TD. Kumar Singh’s 46-yard TD run had New Paltz ahead 21-0 16 minutes into the game.

John Perugino’s juggling 51yard catch and run got Marlboro on the board, but the Huguenots answered with a 16-yard score from Kenny Verney to make it 28-7 at halftime.

Verney sealed the victory in the second half.

New Paltz can clinch the division and, with it, a first-round sectional bye with a win next Saturday at Red Hook. Rondout 24, Highland 17

At Highland, Rondout got back to .500 (3-3 overall, 1-3 Class B Division I) by pulling out a fourth-quarter win over (0-3, 2-4) Highland.

Mike Malheiro rushed for 115 yards and Isiah Daubon ran for 91 yards and one touchdown and passed for 102 for Highland. Warwick 28, Roosevelt 7

AT Hyde Park, Gene Decker tossed two touchdown passes to Connor Perez to lead (2-2, 2-4) Warwick in a Class AA Division II game.

At Poughkeeps­ie, Camron Abalos ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns and also threw for 90 and two more scores to lead (40, 5-1) Spackenkil­l in its Homecoming win over (0-4, 0-6) Ellenville.

The Spartans had a pair of special teams TDs in the Class B Division II win as Adam Loughran returned a blocked punt for a score and Marlon Brooks had a 55-yard intercepti­on return. Dover 48, Pine Plains 0

At Dover Plains, Jaquon Futrell ran for 219 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries and also threw two TDs to Angus Edmundson to lead (2-3, 3-3) Dover over (1-4, 1-5) Pine Plains/Rhinebeck in a Class B Division II game.
