Postcard Show and Sale on April 2 in Kingston
WHAT: Spring Antique Postcard Show and Sale
WHEN: April 2from 9a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Andy Murphy Midtown Recreation Center, 467 Broadway, Kingston
DETAILS: The Katterskill Postcard Club will present its semiannual show. Approximately 20 dealers will be offering hundreds of thousands of postcards for sale. There are postcards from almost every possible topic and from every state. Dealers have been asked to provide a concentration of Hudson Valley communities and view cards. Cards are sorted by state and county with topics separated to make selection easy. Light food is available at Stone Soup Deli across the street. Admission is $3 for adults.

College admissions, financial aid focus of presentation
WHAT: Presentation, “College Admissions and Financial Aid”
WHEN: March 27 from 7 to 8 p.m., with preregistration deadline March 24
WHERE: Gardiner Library, 133 Farmer’s Turnpike, Gardiner
DETAILS: The library will host “College Admissions and Financial Aid” with Elizabeth Levine. The presentation is geared toward parents of high school students. It aims to demystify the daunting college admissions and financial aid process and gain insight to this complex and stressful experience. Among the topics that will be covered are the college search, the application process, the college essay and selecting the right topic, whether to take the ACT or the SAT and financial aid. The program is free, but pre-registration by March 24 is required.

Giacomo Gates performs with Don Miller Trio on March 23 in Kingston
WHO: Giacomo Gates with Don Miller Trio WHEN: March 23 at 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Senate Garage, 4 N. Front St., Kingston
DETAILS: Jazzstock will present a performance by Giacomo Gates and the Don Mille Trio. Gates was chosen in a 2012 Downbeat Critic’s poll as a rising star male vocalist. Will Friedwald of The New York Sun wrote of him, “e evokes an age (that I would hope is not so terribly bygone) when musicians were entertainers and entertainers were musicians, and a sense of humor was as important as a sense of rhythm.” Joining him will be Don Miller on bass, Larry Ham on piano and T. Xiques on drums. Admission is $15.

FDR’s labor secretary subject of Fireside Chats
WHAT: Fireside Chats WHEN: March 30 and April 6
WHERE: St. James Chapel, 10 E. Market St., Hyde Park
DETAILS: The Fireside Chats will conclude for the with two presentations on Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet. Linda Bouchey will give the first talk, “Frances Perkins: The Early Years.” It will focus on her early family life and the importance of her Christian faith. Al Vinck will be the speaker for the second talk, “The New Deal’s First Lady.” Before agreeing to be Franklin Roosevelt’s secretary of labor, Perkins had a list of demands for him. She shaped what is known today as FDR’s New Deal. Receptions will follow each event. In case of inclement weather, programs will take place the following Thursday. There are no reservations, but seating is limited.

Program looks at teen dating violence, bullying
WHAT: Presentation, “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” WHEN: April 3 from 7 to 8 p.m.
WHERE: Red Hook High School cafeteria, 103 W. Market St., Red Hook
DETAILS: Helping youngsters understand healthy vs. unhealthy relationships has never been more challenging since social media has become an inescapable part of most lives. Maria E. Melilli, director of prevention and education; and Emily Berkowitz, community educator for Grace Smith House, Inc., will address the issue in this presentation. They will reveal the warning signs of bullying/ cyber-bullying and teen dating violence. They will walk participants through three specific forms of bullying and four forms of teen dating violence. They will also provide parents with knowledge and tools to help us discuss bullying and teen dating violence with their children. The program is free and open to the public. People planning to attend are asked to bring needed items for Grace Smith House, which seeks to enable individuals and families to live free from domestic violence. Among the items needed are mouthwash, shaving cream, tampons, maxi pads, African hair care products, baby shampoo, baby/children’s body wash, baby lotion, diapers and diaper cream, baby wipes and gift cards.
