City imposes street restrictions, closures for snow-removal project

- Freeman staff

A largescale snow-removal project starts at 9 a.m. today, bringing parking restrictions and street closures to residential areas of the city starting in Midtown, according to a city press release.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, at the request of Kingston Mayor Steve Noble and Ulster County Executive Michael Hein, authorized the New York state Department of Transportation to assist in the removal of the snow from last Tuesday’s storm that the National Weather Service in Albany said dumped 23 inches on the city.

Crews will work up to 24 hours a day as needed, the release said.

Road closures will be in effect on a block-by-block basis as removal is underway, and due the narrow width of the streets there will be no parking starting at 9 a.m. Monday on the following Midtown streets:

Streets perpendicular to Broadway include Maiden Lane, St. James, Liberty, Franklin, Van Buren, Van Deusen, Center, Cedar and Warren streets.

Streets parallel to Broadway include Prospect and Furnace streets, Clinton Avenue, Oak, Pine, Fair and Wall streets, Green Street between Maiden Lane and St. James Street, Schryver Court. North Wilbur Avenue, Sterling Street and Iwo Jima Lane.

When this work is completed, the crews will move to the other side of Broadway, the release said.

Parking will not be allowed on the odd side of the following streets.

Streets perpendicular to Broadway include Elemendorf, Downs, Oneil, Cornell, Thomas and Ardsley streets and Field Court.

Streets parallel to Broadway include Smith, Bruyn, Ten Broeck, South Manor, Wiltwyck and Brown avenues, Progress Street, Ora Place and Saccoman and Fashion lanes.

During the evening and overnight hours Monday crews will focus on removing snow on Broadway from Greenkill Avenue to Foxhall Avenue, to reduce the effect on local traffic, the release said.

Due to the size of the equipment, streets where cars remained parked cannot be serviced, according to the release.

Alternative parking lots in Midtown include the Sea Deli Lot, Everette Hodge Community Center, Cornell Street lot, Prince Street lot, the AME Zion Church at Franklin Street lot, the lot next to Arace Eletronics and the Broadway Commons lot at the former Kings Inn site.

Once a street has been cleared of snow, vehicles may return, the release said.

Noble expects that residential streets on both sides of Broadway will be cleared by Monday evening, the release said.

Work not finished in any of these areas will proceed into Tuesday, the release said.

Tuesday’s snow removal schedule will be announced on Monday afternoon after an assessment by city and state crews.
