Kingston winning streak stretches to 11 straight
Kingston High swept Ichbod Crane and Mechanicville on Saturday for their 11th straight softball victory.
HERKIMER, N.Y. >> Rolling ... rolling ... rolling.
That’s Kingston High’s softball team heading into this week’s Section 9, Class AA tournament. The top-seeded Tigers extended their win streak to 11 in a row Saturday by sweeping its second doubleheader in three days.
Kingston beat Ichabod Crane 3-2 and Mechanicville 11-0 to win its bracket of the Morabito Tournament, postponed from two weeks ago.
“It was a good thing for to come here, to see different competition and to prepare for this week,” Kingston coach Trishann Hayes said.
The Tigers boast a 15-3 record heading into sectionals. They play host to Valley Central in a quarterfinal game 4
p.m. Tuesday.
Kingston scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull out the win over Ichabod Crane and bang out 16 hits for the triumph over Mechanicville.
Lauren Shambo and Megan Peace combined on a four-hitter in the first game and Shannon Bonewit and Angela VanPelt collaborated on a three-hitter in game two.
Peace singled twice and Bonewit had a single, double and two RBI against Crane. Bonewit’s two-out double drove in Alyssa Finno in the third and her single scored Shambo to tie at 2-2 in the fifth.
Peace singled with one out and went to second on a passed ball in the sixth. With two out, VanPelt lifted a a fly ball to right center that the two outfielders misplayed, allowing Peace to score.
Ichabod Crane had a runner on second in the sixth, but Bonewit caught a liner at short and doubled up the runner for a double play. Crane had two runners on with one out in the seventh, but Peace got a strikeout and a grounder to end the game.
Peace pitched three innings of one-hit relief for the win. Shambo struck out five and allowed three hits over the first four innings.
Bonewit tossed a onehitter over four innings, striking out three, to win game two. VanPelt fanned two and surrendered two hits in relief.
Finno had a single, two doubles and four RBI to lead the Tigers against Mechanicville. She hit a RBI in the first and a bases-clearing double in the second as Kingston built a 6-0 lead.
A five-run fourth was highlighted by Alyssa Villielm’s first varsity homer, a two-run shot. She also singled in the game.
Jessica Chilcott had two singles and two RBI, Sydney Bonewit singled twice and had a RBI, Kaitlynn Schrowang singled and tripled, and VanPelt and Shambo both had two singles in the win.
