Race No. 3 in the Onteora Runners Club Grand Prix Series, the Run the Pace 12k held last Sunday at Locust Hill Farm in Hyde Park, provided one of the more interesting courses for club runners.

The route travels on a trail normally meant for horses and can lead to some challenging decisions from start to finish.

Due to the heavy rains last Saturday, the farm’s Spring Hunter Pace for the four-legged runners did not happen, so runners on Sunday didn’t have to deal with “chewed up” footing, according to race director Tracy Little.

Another unique twist is the gold, silver and bronze horseshoes given to the top three finishers in each race, an award you don’t see anywhere else locally.

The 12k distance was selected for the series and there was an accompanying 5k run as well.

In the 12k, Terry McCann found the surface to his liking and zipped to victory in 55:39.

His brother, Ryan McCann, settled for second place in 57:45, just ahead of thirdplace finisher Max Gruner.

Rachel Myers, the women’s winner, finished fourth overall in 1:01:55, then Keith Kortright placed fifth in 1:03:00 and Steve Schindler took sixth in 1:04:55.

Women’s runner-up Diane Linenbroker was seventh overall in 1:06:27, Dave Seche took eighth in 1:10:43, followed by Maura Sullivan (1:11:22) and Jacque Schiffer (1:13:14) to complete the top 10.

Other top local finishers included Oren Heberle (1:15:32), Alex Gruner (1:17:03), Margaux Seche (1:17:30), James Rodden (1:17:54), Terry Newman (1:20:00), Deb Domack (1:21:59), Theresa Baker (1:22:43), Sue Hoger (1:23:08), Maya Heberle (1:23:20) and Jim Williams (1:24:31).

Collin Milone was the winner of the 5k race in 26:08, with Manson Faust second in 31:41.

Connie Seigh was the winner for the ladies and third overall in 32:11.

Victor McGregor finished fourth in 32:19, Trace Kaner was fifth in 34:33, and David Heberle was sixth in 35:33.

Rounding out the top 10 were Ethan Milone (37:00), Dillon McCutcheon (37:59), Aaron Milone (38:00) and Samantha Slattern (40:36).

Proceeds from the race benefitted Every Mother Counts, an organization devoted to providing health care services for women around the world.

Woodtock Races up next in GP Series

And, continuing with the ORC Grand Prix Series, the next race on the slate is the Woodstock Races 15k, set for next Sunday at 8 a.m.

The race, which used to occur on Memorial Day, is now held the day before and also features a 5k option as well.

Entry fee is $20 for preregistered runners and increases to $25 on race day.

Both runs start and finish at the Woodstock Music Lab school (site of the former Zena Elementary School) on John Joy Road in Woodstock.

The courses are scenic, challenging and on country roads in around the school.
