FDR boys, NP girls win MHAL titles
Roosevelt High defended its boys title, while New Paltz captured the girls crown at the Mid-Hudson Athletic League track and field championships.
The Presidents outpaced New Paltz 179.50-145.16 in the boys meet, while the Huguenots turned the tables on Roosevelt in the girls meet, winning 145-136.
Roosevelt’s Sarah Trainor led all competitors by capturing four individual league titles. She was first in the 800-meter run in 2:20.99; the 1,500 in 5:00.09; the 3,000 in 10:58.86 and 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:36.34. No other competitor — boy or girl — won
more than two events.
For the boys, New Paltz’s Kumar Singh, Ellenville’s Wesley Cruz, Wallkill’s Richard Samuels and Spackenkill’s Kabongo Barry were double winners. Singh captured the 110 hurdles (15.34) and triple jump (41-6.5), while Cruz was victorious in the 1,600 (4:32.61) and 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:52.70). Samuels captured the 400
(50.19) and 800 (1:58.77) titles, while Barry was first in both the 100 (10.82) and 200 (22.38).
Other individual winners in the boys meet were New Paltz’s Blake Olsen in the 400 hurdles (57.44), Mike Gottstine in the long jump (19-10.5) and Dagi Tadesse in the pole vault (13-9); Roosevelt’s Neil Tompkins in the shot put (45-7.5), Ellenville’s Jose Cruz in the 3,200 (9:44.75); Wallkill’s Anthony Nelson in the high jump (62); and Spackenkill’s Kyiev Bennermon in the discus (123-7). The Presidents were
victorious in the 400 and 3,200 relays, while Wallkill claimed the 1,600 relay.
In the girls meet, Kaela Santos was the only other double winner, capturing the shot put in 32-6 and discus 110-3. Huguenots’ teammate Morgan Kuyl captured the 400 hurdles in 1:08.10. Onteora, meanwhile, had a pair of champions in Cecilia Maillet in the long jump (16-4.25) and Halle King in the triple jump (36-1.75).
Other individual winners were Sam Rodriguez in the 100 (12.84); Rondout
Valley’s Medina Walters in the 200 (26.27); Rhinebeck’s Stephanie Cassens in the 400 (58.98); Poughkeepsie’s Kyla Browne in the 100 hurdles (15.99); Ellenville’s Acinel Bruce in the high jump (5-0); and Roosevelt’s Sydney Tomaine in the pole vault (8-0). Roosevelt captured both the 400 and 3,200 relays, while Rhinebeck was first in the 1,600 relay.
The Section 9 championship meets at Middletown High are next, with the B/C meet on Thursday and the A/D meet on Friday.
