Transgender residents need protection, too
Dear Editor, I fully support an open and democratic government. That means that Citizens must have an opportunity to discuss, ask questions, tell their experiences and be listened to by each other and their elected representatives.
That includes having an open hearing regarding proposed Local Law No. 18. This law would prohibit discrimination against transgender Ulster County citizens in public housing and access to public services and facilities. The law would also allow folks to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity.
Let’s be honest, folks. This is probably already happening and no one to my knowledge has been harmed except for transgendered human beings. They deserve protection from violence, too. We all need to use the restroom. Cut them a break.
Folks who are afraid of people who are different than themselves need to seek out a good cognitive therapist.
Check the facts before you jump to conclusions. Most sexual assaults are perpetrated by heterosexual men. Heterosexual men who have been stalking or “grooming” women and girls for the right time to strike. Perpetrators are usually someone you know, often a family member or a friend of a friend.
Direct your fear into taking action in the correct direction. If you truly want to reduce sexual violence, educate boys and men to respect girls and women and start with your own family. Janice L. Myers New Paltz, N.Y.
