Area teams earn berths in Section 9 semifinals

Kevin Brennie and Anthony Hegedus combined on a six-hitter as Highland upset top-seeded Spackenkil­l 7-1 in the Section 9, Class B quarterfin­als. Highland will play at Rondout Valley in today’s semifinals.

Kevin Brennie and Anthony Hegedus combined on a sixhitter Monday as Highland High upset top-seeded Spackenkil­l 7-1 in the Section 9, Class B quarterfin­als.

Highland, the eighthseed, will play at Rondout Valley and Marlboro will host Chester in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Rondout knocked off John S. Burke Catholic 7-5, Marlboro beat Onteora 13-0, and Chester downed Rhinebeck 8-0 on Monday. Highland 7, Spackenkil­l 1

Brennie struck out nine and shut out the Spartans on four hits for six innings to lead the Huskies. Highland took charge with two runs in the first frame and added five runs from the middle innings on.

Isiah Daubon led the attack with a single, two doubles and two RBI. Dario DiValentin­o had two RBI and Kyle Crimi and Nik Turner each had a double for Highland.

Anthony Silvestri had a single, double and one RBI and Zach Cioffi singled twice for Spackenkil­l. Rondout 7, Burke 5

At Goshen, Andrew Huffman and Dallas Romaguera each hit solo homers and combined to pitch Rondout to its victory.

Huffman, who drove in three runs, fanned 10 and allowed one earned run on five hits over six innings for the decision. Romaguera, who also singled and scored twice, pitched the seventh.

Gavin Costello had two singles and two RBI and Sam Culwell had a runscoring double for the (127) Ganders.

Nelson singled and hit a solo homer for Burke. Marlboro 13, Onteora 0

At Marlboro, Cade Cabrera hit a three-run homer, Sam Mongelli slugged two doubles, Austin Casey had two hits and two RBI, Brendan Mahusky drove in two runs and Hayden Toussaint singled twice for the (11-7) Dukes.

Four Marlboro pitchers combined to shut out Onteora on five hits. Mongelli, who struck out five and allowed four hits in four innings, got the win. Mahusky, Jacob Dreyer and Connor Corrado each threw an inning and struck out one in relief.

Anthony Umhey had two of the hits for Onteora.
