Onteora standout 6th in state tournament
Justin Lane top finisher among 4 area qualifiers at NYSPHSAA championship tourney at Cornell
Onteora High senior Justin Lane tied for sixth place to lead four area golfers at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys golf championship tournament at Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.
Reigning Ulster County Men’s Amateur (Herdegen) champion Lane had rounds of 73 and 78 for a two-day total of 151, tying him with reigning Section 9 champion Josh Kienz of Valley Central (76-75) as the top finisher among sectional competitors.
Somers High’s Nathan Han (Section 1) captured the state title defeating Manhasset’s Adam Xiao (Section 8) in a playoff. Han had rounds of 74 and 72, while Xiao carded a 72 and 74 for 146s. Rounding the top-5 were Pittsford Sutherland’s Danny Gianniny (Section 5) with a 78-68—147, Victor’s Christian Chapman (Section 5) with a 78-41— 149 and Susquehanna Valley’s D.J. Griffiths (Section 4) with a 77-73— 150.
Reigning Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion Jeff Peters of Roosevelt tied for 21st with rounds of 81 and 76 for a 157, while Kingston’s Jake Hommel tied for 25th, carding rounds of 83 and 75 for a 158. Kingston’s reigning Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association champion Scott Kleeschulte (80-81) tied for 41st with a 161 total.
Among Section 9 golfers, Spackenkill’s Erik Stauderman tied for 17th, shooting rounds of 79 and 77 for a 156, while Washingtonville’s Matt Dickson (82-75) tied for 21st with a 157. Millbrook’s Tyler Schaad tied for 64th with rounds of 86 and 80 for a 166, while Newburgh Free Academy’s Zain Jafar (85-83) tied for 69th among 99 competitors with a 168.
Section 5 won the team title with a combined 2-day total of 1,078, with Section 8 (1,087), Section 1 (1,088), Section 9 (1,090) and Section 11 (1,102) rounding the top-5 of the 11team event.
