Lt. Col. John Haines, age 97, formerly of Kingston, N.Y., died in his home in Biloxi, Miss., on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, after a short illness. He was born on Feb. 2, 1920, in Kingston, N.Y., and graduated Kingston High School. On Sept. 26, 1943, he married the former Joan P. Quick. Mr. Haines entered military service in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. After 28 years of military service, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel Command Pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Haines was then employed in Civil Service in the Safety Division at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Miss. In 1982, with 40 years credit in the Army Air Corps/USAF, he retired.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Joan; his parents, Mrs. Martha (Elting) Haines and Fred Haines of Kingston, N.Y.; his brothers, Cecil, Oliver and Howard Haines; and his sister, Marion Haines Birk.

Survivors include his two loving daughters and sons-in-law, Larraine and Sheldon McCloskey of Biloxi, Miss., and Leslie and Mike Clarke of Knoxville, Tenn.; his four grandchild­ren, Kelly McCloskey (Curt) Moore of Winter Springs, Fla., Jaclyn Clarke (Jimmy) Delaney, Lindsay Clarke, and John Michael (Sarah) Clarke; his great-granddaugh­ters, Anne Haines Clarke, Emma Clarke and Madilyn Delaney, all of Knoxville, Tenn.; his brother, William Haines of Rougemont, N.C.; his sisters-in-law, Helen Haines of Goshen, N.Y., Barbara Craig of Tillson, N.Y., and Kaye Quick; and his brother-in-law, Donald Quick of Kingston, N.Y.; as well as numerous nephews.

On Wednesday, July 5, 2017, Lt. Col. Haines was laid to rest with full military honors at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
