Holzmann, Turco top Open doubles crowns

Shawn Holzmann and Tom Turco won two titles each to highlight the doubles portion of the Ulster County Open.

Shawn Holzmann and Tom Turco won two titles each to highlight the doubles portion of the Ulster County Open Tennis Tournament at Forsyth Park.

Holzmann teamed with Dave Jutton to win the open men’s title and paired with Shannon Mulcahy to claim the open mixed crown. Turco, meanwhile captured the senior men’s doubles title with Ravi Ramaswami and the senior mixed championsh­ip with Karla Wainwright.

Other champions crowned were Karen Gill and Ashley Haley in the open women’s division and Charlie Lay and Jim Donovan in the super senior bracket.

In the open men’s final, the topseeded team of Holzmann and Jutton rallied to defeat the un-

seeded tandem of Don Guidi and Bill Blake, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-3, with Holzmann and Mulcahy swept past Gill and Matt Canzonetti, 6-1, 6-2 in the open mixed final.

The top-seeded senior men’s team of Turco and Ramaswami cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the unseeded team of James Morrison and Richard Juman, while Turco and Wainwright downed Jody Mallen and Scott Mallen, 6-1, 6-1 to claim the senior mixed crown.

Gill and Haley, the topseeded open women’s team, defeated No. 2 seeds Mulcahy and Yvonne Lenzen-Roth, 6-3, 7-5, while Lay and Donovan handled Bob Witty and Robert Goldberg, 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the super senior final.

The singles portion of the annual tournament begins Thursday.
