Events will mark anniversary of attacks
KINGSTON, N.Y » Communities across the region on Monday will commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, including the following:
ULSTER COUNTY Kingston
The Kingston Fire Department will host a ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. in Firemen’s Park at the intersection of Washington and Hurley avenues. Several area fire departments will participate. After the ceremony, at about 9 a.m., there will be a breakfast open to the public at the Wiltwyck Fire Station on Frog Alley, which is within walking distance from the park.
New Paltz
The New Paltz Community Sept. 11th Memorial Committee, in association with the New Paltz Fire and Police departments and New Paltz Rescue Squad, will hold a “Ceremony of Remembrance” at the Sept. 11 Memorial Park on North Putt Corners Road and Henry W. Dubois Drive at 8:30 a.m. A ceremonial bell will be rung at 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., the times that the World Trade Center towers were struck by the hijacked planes.
Stone Ridge
SUNY Ulster will honor those lost and pay tribute to all the people who serve the community and country at an annual remembrance ceremony at 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 12. The ceremony will take place at the steps of the Macdonald DeWitt Library of the campus, 491 Cottekill Road, Stone Ridge. There will be a performance by SUNY Ulster Music Department students and John McGovern, a bagpiper from the Ulster Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard. There will also be several special guest speakers, including the Rev. Janet Vincent, who spent time at Ground Zero in the wake of the attacks.
Saugerties
A “9/11 Salute To Uniformed Public Service” will take place from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at the Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex.
Town of Ulster
A memorial service and wreath-laying will begin at 10 a.m. at Robert Post Park, off Ulster Landing Road.
DUTCHESS COUNTY Hyde Park
A candlelight service will begin at 7 p.m. at the Paul Tegtmeier Memorial Site in Hackett Hill Park. Free candles will be provided starting at 6:30 p.m. Tegtmeier was a Hyde Park resident and New York City firefighter who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
