New Paltz, Marlboro win to improve records to 2-0

The New Paltz and Marlboro football teams both posted big Section 9, Class B wins. The Huguenots recorded a 35-7 victory over Spackenkil­l, while the Dukes were 55-12 winners over Highland.

New Paltz and Marlboro highs’ football teams pulled away for big Section 9, Class B football victories Friday night.

New Paltz downed Spackenkil­l, 35-7, while Marlboro scored 48 unanswered points in a 5512 triumph over Highland.

In Friday’s other action, Chester edged Ellenville, 6-0; Monticello blanked Wallkill, 40-0; and Port Jervis downed Roosevelt, 31-6. 16-yard TD run just before halftime, and the Huguenots took control with 21 unanswered points in the second half.

“We were dominant against them,” said New Paltz coach Tom Tegeler, whose team corraled Lewinson, who rushed for 195 yards last week against Rondout Valley. “I don’t think he got 60 yards (rushing) against us tonight.”

Brian Kenney had 130 yards receiving, all on 50and 80-yard TD connection­s with Verney. Christian Burda ran for 137 yards and two TDs on 17 carries, scoring on 7- and 10-yard bursts.

Safety Aidan Hoffman intercepte­d two passes, and middle linebacker Kenny Verney made nine tackles to lead the Hugie defense. a contest for the better part of the first half with the host (0-2) Huskies taking 6-0 and 12-7 leads on Marlboro.

The (2-0) Dukes, however, just had too many weapons. They regained the lead, built it up to a 3512 advantage by halftime and tacked on 20 more points in the second half.

Sam Mongelli threw for 165 yards and Phil DeSantis ran for 114 yards and four touchdowns to lead the way. John Perugino also ran for 121 yards and Christian Diorio gained 101 on just three carries, one of them on an 85-yard score. Chester 6, Ellenville 0

At Ellenville, Justin Quiles’ first-half 35-yard TD pass to Hezekiah Frazier proved to be the difference for (2-0) Chester in a tight Class C contest.

Ray Younger and Deantè Bruce each intercepte­d a pass and Edjren Jorge forced a fumble and had five sacks to lead the defense for (0-2) Ellenville. Monticello 40, Wallkill 0

At Wallkill, Khadeem Richards scored five touchdowns — four rushing and one on an intercepti­on return — to lead (1-1) Monticello over the (0-2) Panthers in a Class A contest. Jonah Lilley also scored twice for Monticello. Port Jervis 31, Roosevelt 6

At Hyde Park, Branden Roesch threw for three touchdowns to lead (2-0) Port Jervis in a Class A win over (1-1) Roosevelt.

The Presidents turned the ball over on downs three times in the game, including on the Port Jervis 6-yard-line when it was a 12-0 contest.

Elijah Hewitt had an intercepti­on for Roosevelt, which scored with 2:11 left on Ryan Taylor’s 31yard TD pass to Tyler Van Steenburgh.
