Series of free chair yoga classes start Sept. 18

A six-week program of free chair yoga classes for seniors ages 55 and older will start Monday, Sept. 18, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Tivoli Village Hall, 86 Broadway.

Chair yoga incorporates both seated and standing yoga poses, using a chair for support. Students will be guided through a series of stretches and postures that are modified to accommodate those with limited mobility and difficulty balancing. Participants will work on building strength, flexibility and balance as they explore the many aspects of yoga.

An additional benefit of yoga is reduced stress and an ability to calm the mind using breathing and meditation techniques. Each class concludes with a final relaxation or guided meditation. The classes are taught by area yoga instructor Barbara Eichin, who has been studying and practicing yoga for more than 20 years.

The classes are free, but space is limited and registration is required. Call the Tivoli library at (845) 757-3771 to register. You must commit to the full six weeks of classes to be accepted. There is no class on Columbus Day (Oct. 9).
