Zachary Stephen Strouse, the grandson of Hurley residents, graduated, cum laude, from West Chester University of Pennsylvan­ia, with a bachelor’s degree in music education.

He is a member of the Rho Sigma chapter of the fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and was a part of the Criterions jazz ensemble. He is pursuing a teaching position in New Jersey.

He is the son of Stephen and Wayzata Stickley Strouse of Manahawkin, N.J., and the grandson of the Rev. Charles and Esther Stickley of Hurley.

••• Joshua Vazquez of Hurley graduated from Grantham University in Lenexa, Kan., with an online bachelor of science degree in electronic engineerin­g technology.

••• Two area residents attending Union College in Schenectad­y — Caroline Roberto of Highland and Elizabeth Ricci of Red hook — conducted research during the summer.

Students worked closely with 64 faculty stretched across 23 department­s and programs. Most projects were funded through the undergradu­ate research program. The rest were supported by government or scientific society grants to faculty members, academic department­s, and/or with foundation funding.

Roberto, a member of the Class of 2018, participat­ed in a project titled “Identifyin­g Backward Facing Cells in a Dragonfly.” Ricci, a member of the Class of 2018, participat­ed in a project titled “SociallyAw­are Robot Navigation.”

••• Two area residents attending the University of Vermont in Burlington — Henry Tynes of Tivoli and Mitchell Hutchins of Rhinebeck — were among more than 250 first-year students who participat­ed in TREK, a sevenday enrichment program sponsored by the university’s Department of Student Life.

The TREK program sends new students all over the state of Vermont to explore the region’s wilderness, develop leadership skills and work on community service projects. TREK is one of the biggest and most diverse new-student, collegiate, community building programs in the Northeast region.

Tynes participat­ed in canoeing TREK. Hutchins participat­ed in rock climbing TREK.

Adrianna Elashker of Kingston received the dean’s award with distinctio­n at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., for the spring semester.

Students earn dean’s award with distinctio­n status by achieving a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

She is a member of the Class of 2020.
