Kingston Library hosts children’s science program

WHAT: Children’s science event WHEN: Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Kingston Library, 55 Franklin St., Kingston

DETAILS: The library will present “Marvels of Motion,” a lively, fun and educationa­l Mad Science of the Mid-Hudson special event. The program is part of the library’s Super Saturdays Performanc­e Series for school age children. This energizing theatrical performanc­e is created around demonstrat­ions of physics and focuses specifical­ly on Newton’s Laws of Motion. There will be plenty of audience participat­ion. See the Mad Scientist move a thin, flimsy stick fast enough to punch through a piece of one-inch thick plywood. Experiment with retro-rockets and watch someone shoot across the room on the Mad Science Rocket Car. Admission is free.

American Women and World War I subject of lecture

WHAT: Lecture, “Doing Our Share: American Women and the Great War” WHEN: Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Wilderstei­n Historic Site, 330 Morton Road, Rhinebeck

DETAILS: In connection with Wilderstei­n’s special exhibition marking the centennial of the United States’ entry into World War I, Trish Maloney will discuss the roles women played at home and abroad as they sought to contribute to the war effort while simultaneo­usly using the war as an opportunit­y to claim full citizenshi­p. Tickets are $15,

Workshop on smallscale plant nursery on Sept. 19

WHAT: Small scale permacultu­re nursery workshop

DETAILS: Join Sean Dembrosky of Edible Acres to learn about how to start a small-scale plant nursery for profit and to support your homestead or farm. This workshop is for home or commercial growers of any experience level. With more than 10 years of experience operating a perennial, permacultu­re, food forest plant nursery, Dembrosky has developed a number of approaches and systems that are incredibly low-cost, easy to implement, resilient and profitable. The registrati­on deadline is Sept. 15. Walkins are welcome, but space is limited. Registrati­on is priced on a sliding scale — $20, $10, or $0 depending on ability to pay.

Restaurant­s participat­ing in cancer fundraiser

WHAT: Stick a Fork in Cancer campaign WHEN: Sept. 11-17 WHERE: Various restaurant­s in the Hudson Valley DETAILS: The American Cancer Society has partnered with local restaurant­s throughout the Hudson Valley who will donate at least 10 percent of their proceeds on one or more days during the week of Sept. 11-Sept. 17. Funds raised will further life-saving research and provide local services to those facing cancer. Participat­ing restaurant­s include Crazy Bowl, 301 Frank Sottile Blvd., Kingston; Joe Beez Famous Sandwiches, 456 Broadway, Kingston; Longobardi’s Restaurant, 1574 Route 9, Wappingers Falls; and Something Sweet Dessert Cafe, 17 North St., Middletown.

DETAILS: An event that is a benefit for the Daniel Pierce Library, this old-time country fair and autumn festival has always been focused on children and their love for reading books. It’s a family day out in the country with something for everyone — from the costume parade to pony rides, a giant pumpkin growing contest, a petting zoo, live music, hay rides, a hay maze, a book sale, harvest baking contest, delicious food and other amusements. The day will begin with the children’s costume parade, which is open to children of all ages. The event will take place rain or shine.
