Man who joked about shooting trooper faces charges
CONSTANTIA, N.Y. (AP) » Authorities say a New York man was joking when he showed up at a neighbor’s house with handcuffs attached to his wrist and claimed to have just shot a state trooper.
The neighbor fell for the joke and called 911. Now, 59-year-old Leonard Graumenz faces charges of reckless endangerment and falsely reporting a crime.
Police say the incident occurred Saturday when Graumenz attached handcuffs to one of his wrists and told his neighbor he had crashed his truck and shot a trooper trying to arrest him.
Police say after responding to the neighbor’s 911 call, troopers determined Graumenz had made it all up.
He was issued a ticket and ordered to appear in town court Sept. 18.
A message left at a phone listing for Graumenz in Constantia wasn’t returned.
Police say a New York City man fatally stabbed his wife before jumping out a window and falling eight stories to his death.
New York Police Department officials say 53-year-old Bernarda Ferreiras was apparently stabbed to death inside the Manhattan apartment she shared with her husband, 69-year-old Francisco Ferreiras. Officials say Ferreiras jumped out a window to his death after stabbing his wife.
Officers say they found the man unconscious next to the Harlem apartment building while investigators found his wife inside the apartment with stab wounds to her torso. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The husband was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
Motorcyclist dies in parkway crash
Police say a 25-year-old motorcyclist has died in a crash on a New York City highway where a car involved in the accident caught fire.
The motorcyclist was driving on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens Sunday morning when he collided with a guardrail. According to police, he was ejected while his bike kept going and lodged under an SUV that showered sparks on the sedan behind it.
The sedan caught fire because of the sparks and debris.
NYPD officials say the biker was pronounced
dead at the scene by responding medics. The SUV driver was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
Police say driver who plowed into bike tour was drunk
Police say a woman is in critical condition after a drunken driver plowed into a group of cyclists
participating in a biking event in New York City.
Three bicyclists were injured during the Sunday morning NYC Century Bike Tour in Brooklyn. Police say the 39-year-old driver of the van has been arrested and charged with vehicular assault, driving without a license and driving while impaired.
Police say the man was intoxicated when he drove into the crowd of bicyclists who were stopped at a red light.
Authorities say a 55-yearold woman from Queens is in critical condition.
Police say a 31-year-old man is in stable condition, and a third suffered minor
injuries.
Fall out of window fatal for boy, 5
Authorities say a 5-year-old boy has died after falling out of a thirdfloor bathroom window at a New York City condominium.
Police say William Chen was being watched by his grandparents while playing on the third floor inside a Queens condo on Sunday afternoon. Authorities say the boy went to the bathroom and managed to get out of the window.
Police say the boy landed in a stairwell below.
The boy was unresponsive
at the scene and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police officials say no arrests have been made and that an investigation into the fall is continuing.
Man hit wife with hammer in nursing home, police say
Authorities say an 88-yearold man has been charged with attempted murder after hitting his wife in the head with a hammer inside the New York nursing home where she was undergoing treatment.
The Erie County district
attorney’s office said Monday that Martin Turkiewicz, of Cheektowaga, was also charged with assault following Saturday’s attack inside the Garden Gate Health Care Facility in his hometown in suburban Buffalo.
Police say 86-year-old Rita Turkiewicz was at the facility for physical rehabilitation when her husband of 60 years walked into her room and hit her with a hammer. A possible motive for the attack hasn’t been released.
Martin Turkiewicz has pleaded not guilty and is being held in jail without bail pending a court appearance Wednesday.
His wife is being treated at a hospital.
Boy fatally injured after being struck by vehicle
Police in Buffalo say a 9-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on a city street.
Officers say the accident occurred late Sunday afternoon at an intersection on the city’s west side.
Police say the boy suffered serious injuries after being hit by a minivan. He was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital, where he died.
Investigators say the driver stopped after the crash. No charges have been filed.
Police are continuing to investigate.
