Saugerties wins Mum Bowl; unbeaten New Paltz cruises
Saugerties High rallied in the second half to score a big 35-26 victory over Roosevelt Saturday in the Sawyers’ Mum Bowl.
Saugerties improved to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in Section 9, Class A, increasing its chances of a postseason berth with the team playing its final regular-season game Friday at Wallkill. Roosevelt is 3-3 overall and in Class A.
Jack Hindes carried the team in the second half. He rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
Roosevelt scored on the game’s first play and jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Saugerties overcame a slow start and had pulled within 18-13 by halftime. Tavin Rell’s long interception return before the break turned the momentum around.
Saugerties pulled in front 28-18, but the Presidents scored to get within 28-26 early in the fourth quarter. Matt Bucci, who had a 30yard touchdown pass to Jake Browe in the game, scored on a long run to clinch the win.
New Paltz 46, Rondout 13
At Kyserike, New Paltz cleared the final obstacle to set up next week’s clash of
unbeatens with Marlboro by spoiling Rondout Valley’s Homecoming.
Jimmy Verney rushed for 169 yards and one touchdown and passed for 140 yards and two TDs (18 yards to Brian Kenney and 48 to Kenny Verney to lead the (60)
Huguenots in the Class B Division I contest. Verney scored on a 17-yard run and threw the TD to Kenney to help put New Paltz up 21-0 in the first quarter.
Mike Pisciotta ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns and Kenny Verney rushed
for a score for the Hugies.
Ben Hikade completed 11-of-24 passes for 125 yards and two TDs to lead (0-2 Division I, 1-5 overall) Rondout.
Kyle van Laer had 11 combined tackles and Nikita Orcea had eight plus and interception for the Ganders.
