Pence leaves after players protest during anthem

Vice President Mike Pence has left the 49ersColts game after about a dozen San Francisco players took a knee during the national anthem.

The former Indiana governor flew in so he could watch Peyton Manning’s jersey retirement ceremony on Sunday. But Pence didn’t stick around long.

Pence said on Twitter: “I left today’s Colts game because (at) POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”

The White House also issued a statement from Pence, in which he says Americans should rally around the flag. Pence said: “I don’t think it’s too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem.”

Pence is a noted sports fan and it’s second major event he’s attended in his home state since taking office in January. He also attended May’s Indianapolis 500, a family tradition.

Donaldson sets up meeting with Nadal in Shanghai

Jared Donaldson of the U.S. enjoyed an early birthday present in beating Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4 in the Shanghai Masters first round on Sunday.

Donaldson, who turns 21 on Monday, saved all eight break points he faced. He broke Cuevas’ serve once in each of the last two sets.

The 56th-ranked Donaldson plans to celebrate his birthday by going to Disney Shanghai on Monday, before experiencing a first career meeting against No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the second round.

“I want to get a picture with Mickey, Pluto the dog, and Daffy Duck,” Donaldson said, laughing.

On a less lighter note, Donaldson said of playing Nadal: “You want to play against the best and see how your game stacks up. Playing against someone like Rafa is really special. If I lose, it will allow me to know what was my game lacking, what I need to improve on to beat guys like him.”

Kentucky QB says he’s ‘good’ after sideline collapse

Kentucky reserve quarterback Luke Wright says on his Twitter account that examinations “all came back good” after he collapsed on the sideline Saturday night during the Wildcats’ victory over Missouri.

Wright, a junior transfer who started last fall against Austin Peay but hadn’t played this season, collapsed with about 9½ minutes remaining in the game Kentucky won 40-34. Play was stopped for several minutes and players from both teams knelt in prayer on the field in a silent stadium as medical personnel treated the 6-foot-4 Cincinnati native. Wright was applauded as he was carried off the sideline on a stretcher.

Coach Mark Stoops said afterward “that was very scary for all of us,” but said Wright was responsive. Stoops did not elaborate on what caused the player to collapse. Wright tweeted early Sunday that he was fine and thanked everyone for their prayers following the scary moment.
