Phyllis Marie (Berardi) Bernard, 86, formerly of Kingston, passed away while in the comforting presence of her family, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at Seasons Hospice, Baltimore, Md., following a yearlong illness.

Phyllis was born in Malden, Mass., on June 3, 1931, daughter of the late Daniel Arthur and Catherine Mary (Iovino) Berardi.

A graduate of Emmanuel College, she earned her master’s degree in Education at SUNY New Paltz College. A member of the Kingston Retired Teachers Associatio­n, Phyllis was employed as an elementary school teacher for the Kingston School District for over 30 years. Her last teaching assignment before her retirement was at Ernest C. Myer Elementary School.

For the past 20 years, she was an integral part of her family’s business, The Port Ewen Pharmacy.

Phyllis enjoyed reading, shopping, cooking, playing Bunco, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her two loving daughters, Cynthia Hazman, and her husband Jonathan, of Baltimore, Md., and Dana Schechter, and her husband Bruce, of Kingston; her beloved grandchild­ren, Chad Hazman, Dani Schechter, and Brent Hazman; and a sister-inlaw, Jean Berardi. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

She was predecease­d by her husband of 42 years, Daniel Bernard, and a grandson, David Daniel Schechter, who both died in 1997, and a brother, Daniel J. Berardi who recently died in May 2017.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, at Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, town of Esopus.

The funeral procession will form at 9 a.m. Monday from the funeral home, thence to Sacred Heart Church, 1055 Broadway, Esopus, where The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Eugene J. Grohe will officiate. Entombment will follow at Wiltwyck Community Mausoleum.
