Doris Metzelaar, formerly of Morris St. in Saugerties, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, in Essex Junction, Vt. She was 98.

The daughter of James and Annie Tilson Iland was born July 11, 1919 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Doris worked at an insurance company during World War II and met her husband, Jan (who was with the Dutch Merchant Marines), while he was in port at N.Y.C. during the war. Doris moved with her family to Saugerties in 1956 and resided at the Metzelaar home on Morris St. for 55 years. Doris was an officer of the First Congregati­onal Church in Saugerties, a member of the Republican Club, the Saugerties Garden Club, and the Saugerties Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by daughter, Anne and her husband Ben Antanaitis, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Ellen and her husband Thomas Cole of Essex Junction, Vt. (who were her caregivers for the past 6 years); granddaugh­ters, Michelle Cole Connor, Laura Cole Altshuler, and Kimberly Cole Connors; grandsons, Ben Antanatis II and Bob Antanaitis; and each of their families with six greatgrand­children. She was predecease­d by her son, James in 1958; daughter, Susan in 2011; and husband, Jan in 2014.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the SeamonWils­ey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Sts., Saugerties, with burial to follow in the Blue Mountain Cemetery. Friends may all Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
