2 charged with violating orders of protection
Two Ellenville men have been arrested for separate incidents of allegedly violating orders of protection, according to village police.
John Garrett, 52, of 29 Canal St., Apt. 2, was arrested Monday on felony charges of assault, criminal mischief and criminal contempt. He was also charged with the misdemeanor of resisting arrest. Garrett was arraigned and sent to the Ulster County Jail without bail.
Ellenville police said they conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Gulf gas station on U.S. Route 209 after receiving a report from state police regarding a man who was wanted for breaking into his estranged girlfriend’s residence in violation of an order of protection. When officers approached the vehicle, they asked the suspect, identified as Garrett, to get out, police said. They said Garrett initially complied but then became combative and refused to do what officers told him.
A struggle began and Garrett assaulted the officers who were trying to arrest him, police said. Police said a taser was used on Garrett and he then was taken into custody without

further incident, though he continued to be combative while being processed at police headquarters.
One village officer was taken to Ellenville Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries caused by Garrett, police said. They said the officer was released a short time later.
In a separate incident, Ernesto Torres Peraza, 40, of 5 Glass St., was arrested Sunday on felony charges of burglary and criminal contempt. He was arraigned in Ellenville Village Court and released on his own recognizance.
Officers were called Sunday to an apartment on Maple Avenue, where they interviewed the female resident, police said. Police said the woman told them a man she previously had a
relationship with, identified as Peraza, forcibly entered her home and pushed open her bedroom door, violating
an order of protection. That caused the woman to wake up, and Peraza fled, police said.
