Ashland ties D II record for consecutive wins

Defending NCAA Division II champion Ashland won its 57th straight game with a 111-46 victory over Tiffin on Saturday to tie the longest D-II basketball winning streak regardless of gender.

Top-ranked Ashland tied the record set by the Winona State men from Jan. 13, 2006-March 22, 2007. The Eagles play at Wayne State (14-4, 9-3) on Thursday for a chance at the alltime mark.

Ashland broke the women’s basketball record with its 52nd consecutive win on Jan. 6, surpassing Washburn University (Topeka, Kansas) in 2005-06.

Senior Andi Daugherty scored a season-high 25 points on 11of-15 shooting against Tiffin to become the third player in program history to score at least 1,750 career points (1,758).

Gronkowski at practice after concussion protocol

Tight end Rob Gronkowski was back on the field Saturday, returning from concussion protocol as the New England Patriots prepare for the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady was also on the field, gripping a football without a glove on his right hand. Brady required stitches in his throwing hand and thumb after an injury in practice last week. The quarterback missed parts of practices leading to the AFC title game but was able to play.

Gronkowski and defensive lineman Deatrich Wise were in uniform and participated in the team stretching period that is open to reporters. Both missed two practices this week while progressing through the NFL’s concussion protocol.

The team is not required to release another injury report until Wednesday.

White Sox LHP Rodon cleared to throw again

White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon has been cleared to begin a throwing program after he had shoulder surgery in September.

The 25-year-old Rodon missed the start of last season with shoulder and biceps problems. He went 2-5 with a 4.15 ERA in 12 starts before returning to the disabled list on Sept. 8.

Rodon says he is going to start throwing on Monday. It’s unclear when he might he might be ready for games, but he is expected to begin this season on the DL.

Rodon was selected by Chicago with the No. 3 pick in the 2014 draft. He is 20-21 with a 3.95 ERA in three major league seasons.

General manager Rick Hahn says Friday the team will go through the process with Rodon “as cautiously as we need to be.”
