PEEKSKILL » Marcel H. Becard, 94, of Drum Hill and formerly of Saugerties and Athens died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018, at his residence with his faithful long term aide and friend Lawson Adjei by his side.

Born Jan. 17, 1924, in Paris; he was the son of the late Emile and Florence Becard. A Veteran of the U.S. Army he served in World War II. As a Sargent First Class he served in the European Front and took part in the invasion of Normandy and liberation of France of which he was immensely proud. He attended Harvard University where he took classes in foremanshi­p. He always had a deep interest in serving his community and served for several years as the Boy Scout Chairman for Greene County during the late 50’s. He worked for Marquette Cement company for over 30 years and was the Chairman of the New York State Safety Committee for Associated Industries and was instrument­al in conducting safety clinics throughout New York State. He served as the President of the New York Eastern Mineral Aggregates Safety Council. After retiring from his work in safety, he continued his commitment to his community by returning to school and becoming the town assessor for Athens, N.Y. He was an avid gardener, stamp collector with a strong interest in history and politics.

Survivors include a daughter, Madeleine and her husband Scott Weissman; daughter-in-law, Patricia Fodor; grandchild­ren, Hope Weissman and Demetrius Becard; and numerous nieces and nephews in France.

Predecease­d by his wife, Albine in 2010, and son, Marcel E. in 2005.

His Service of remembranc­e will be held in the Spring at the SeamonWils­ey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Sts, Saugerties. Interment will follow with military honors in the Blue Mt. Cemetery. Expression­s of condolence may be shared with the family at SeamonWils­eyFuneralH­ome.com
