Early-morning blaze leaves home damaged

A fire early Saturday caused heavy damage to a town of Poughkeeps­ie home, displacing six people.

ARLINGTON, N.Y. » A fire early Saturday morning caused heavy damage to a home at 2170 New Hackensack Road in the town of Poughkeeps­ie, displacing six people.

Five of the residents, who were home at the time, along with the family dog, got out unharmed. The occupants had been sleeping, but were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector.

The Red Cross was coordinati­ng assistance for the family.

Arlington Fire Chief Tory Gallante said the fire was first reported in the bedroom. Firefighte­rs responded to the scene within four minutes of the 12:45 a.m. call, and found heavy fire and smoke conditions in the single-family residence.

The cause of the twoalarm fire was determined to be accidental, involving a failure of electrical distributi­on equipment, the chief said. The fire was investigat­ed by the Arlington Fire District Fire Investigat­ion Division.

Assisting at the scene were the New Hamburg Fire Department, Mobile Life Support Services, Town of Poughkeeps­ie Police, the town Building Department and Water Department, Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response and Central Hudson Gas and Electric Co.

Fire department­s from Wappingers Falls, New Hackensack and Pleasant Valley relocated equipment to cover Arlington stations.

All department­s were back in service by 6 a.m., authoritie­s said.
