Early-morning blaze leaves home damaged
A fire early Saturday caused heavy damage to a town of Poughkeepsie home, displacing six people.
ARLINGTON, N.Y. » A fire early Saturday morning caused heavy damage to a home at 2170 New Hackensack Road in the town of Poughkeepsie, displacing six people.
Five of the residents, who were home at the time, along with the family dog, got out unharmed. The occupants had been sleeping, but were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector.
The Red Cross was coordinating assistance for the family.
Arlington Fire Chief Tory Gallante said the fire was first reported in the bedroom. Firefighters responded to the scene within four minutes of the 12:45 a.m. call, and found heavy fire and smoke conditions in the single-family residence.
The cause of the twoalarm fire was determined to be accidental, involving a failure of electrical distribution equipment, the chief said. The fire was investigated by the Arlington Fire District Fire Investigation Division.
Assisting at the scene were the New Hamburg Fire Department, Mobile Life Support Services, Town of Poughkeepsie Police, the town Building Department and Water Department, Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response and Central Hudson Gas and Electric Co.
Fire departments from Wappingers Falls, New Hackensack and Pleasant Valley relocated equipment to cover Arlington stations.
All departments were back in service by 6 a.m., authorities said.
