Church will have restoration, rededication of stained glass window
HIGHLAND, N.Y. » Lloyd United Methodist Church, 476 New Paltz Road, will have a blessing of the restoration and rededication of one of its more than 150-year-old stained glass windows during a service on Sunday, April 15, at 9 a.m.
The church building had its founding roots in 1851 when it was actually built on a plot of land deeded to the church by Nathan Townsend. The many colorful stained glass windows that grace the main sanctuary are believed to have been installed in the original structure. In 1913, the railroad began construction of the connector to the Mid-Hudson Railroad bridge. This construction cut the church off from the road. As a result of the right-of-way issues, the railroad purchased a different plot of land and moved the church building to its current location while cautiously guarding the stained glass windows during the move.
In 2015, a church committee embarked on a restoration project and contacted DC Studios Stained Glass in Germantown to evaluate the windows and recommend solutions for
those most in need of repair.
The public is invited to the service and a reception taking place April 15 at 1 p.m. to celebrate the occasion and to view
a slide show demonstrating the restoration process. This memorial window will honor the memory of Elvin Elliott, who was a lifetime New Paltz resident, a longtime member of the congregation and the Ulster County community.
