Braves add Sanchez, Perez to roster

The Atlanta Braves have selected the contract of right-hander Anibal Sanchez from Triple-A Gwinnett.

The Braves also added newly acquired catcher Carlos Perez to their 25-man roster.

Atlanta signed the 34-yearold Sanchez to a minor league contract on March 16. He could serve as the team’s fifth starting pitcher, possibly until lefthander Luiz Gohara recovers from a sprained left ankle. The Braves are not expected to need a No. 5 starter before April 10 due to off days.

Atlanta acquired Perez from the Angels for minor league infielder Ryan Schimpf on Saturday night. Perez will provide depth with Tyler Flowers on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain and Kurt Suzuki recovering from a bruised right hand.

Hurricanes’ Huell to declare for draft, won’t retain agent

Miami Hurricanes sophomore forward Dewan Huell has decided to declare for the NBA draft but won’t retain an agent, leaving him the option of continuing his college career.

The school announced Huell’s decision Monday. Teammate Bruce Brown Jr., also a sophomore, made the same decision earlier.

Players have until April 22 to enter the draft and until June 11 to withdraw. The draft is June 21.

Miami freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV also is considering turning pro this year and is projected as a potential lottery pick.

The 6-foot-11 Huell averaged 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds this season and started all 32 games. The Hurricanes lost to Loyola of Chicago in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and finished 22-10.

Clemson’s backcourt of Marcquise Reed and Shelton Mitchell have decided to enter the NBA draft.

Tigers coach Brad Brownell said neither player would hire an agent, meaning they could return for a final college season after getting evaluated by pro personnel.

Reed was Clemson’s leading scorer this season at 15.8 points a game. Mitchell averaged 12.2 points a game and led the Tigers with 119 assists this season.

Brownell says this was the next step for Reed and Mitchell as they pursue goals of playing in the NBA.

College players who enter the NBA draft have until June 11 to withdraw their names for consideration. The draft is on June 21.

Reed and Mitchell helped Clemson go 25-10 and win a programrecord 11 games in Atlantic Coast Conference competition.
