Catskill man charged with setting barn fire
Evan Zenker, 23, is accused of torching the structure on Cold Spring Road in Coxsackie, according to state police.
A Catskill man has been charged with arson, burglary, resisting arrest and trespassing following a fire that destroyed a barn and its contents on Cold Spring Road in Coxsackie, state police said Tuesday.
Evan Zenker, 23, was charged Sunday, police said. He is accused of breaking into a barn at 73 Cold Spring Road in Coxsackie and setting it on fire.
The fire also damaged a vehicle, police said.
State police Senior Investigator Peter Kusminsky said the barn was used for “household storage.”
Police said a neighbor saw a man running from the scene of the fire, which was reported at 6:55 a.m. Sunday. Zenker, who matched the description provided by the witness, then was seen on Green Lake Road in Athens, about 3 miles from the fire, police said.
When approached by law enforcement, Zenker fled on foot and entered an occupied home, and he then fought with the arresting officers, police said.
Zenker was arraigned in Coxsackie Town Court and sent to the Greene County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.
The arson and burglary charges against him ate felonies; the resisting arrest and trespassing charges are misdemeanors.
