New Paltz rallies for opening win over Roosevelt

New Paltz High pulled out a dramatic season-opening softball victory Tuesday, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 4-3 comeback over Roosevelt in MidHudson Athletic League action.

The Huguenots trailed 3-1 in this rematch of last year’s MHAL title game that New Paltz won. Paige Jarvis singled and Mena Bonagura doubled to set up the rally. JoJo Tanzi followed with an RBI single and Jill Harrison hit a sacrifice fly to score Bonagura to tie at 3-3. Tanzi scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Elizabeth Gross, who also doubled in the contest, kept the (1-1) Presidents’ chances alive with a two-out single in the seventh. Madchen Krauss, who had two hits for Roosevelt, lined out to end the game.

Grace Dixon doubled and scored in the third inning for New Paltz. Harrison, who struck out seven and walked just one, got the win. Marlboro 5, Rondout 4

At Kyserike, Marlboro won the rematch of last year’s Section 9, Class B title game with Rondout in a 10-inning battle.

Seventh-grader Ella Leduc had three singles and two RBI, eighthgrad­er Carly Correa singled twice and walked and freshman Sydney Shuta had two hits to lead the (2-1) Dukes. Spackenkil­l 7, Onteora 3

At Boiceville, Spackenkil­l scored a run in the sixth to tie and capitalize­d on walks and errors for a four-run seventh to pull out the win in the teams’ opener.

Maddie McCall had three singles, Claire Sottile a double, single and one RBI, and Jackie Martin singled and doubled to lead the Spartans. Rachel Wilsey struck out seven for the win.

Amelia Schlichtin­g and Kylie Kleine each had a single and double for Onteora.
