Angelo ‘Sonny’ Staccio, 91, of Saugerties

Angelo “Sonny” died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. He was 91 years young.

Born March 27, 1927, in Glasco, he was the son of Angelo and Laura Cashara Staccio. On March 17, 1962, he married the former Betsy Hansen, who predecease­d him on Aug. 4, 2001.

After attending Saugerties High School, he was a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as a Seabee. Following his Navy career, he remained active in many veterans organizati­ons, including Island X-9 with his fellow Seabees. He retired from the Village of Saugerties DPW and was a school bus driver for School Transit and Lezette Express, and was also a former superinten­dant of St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery. A lifetime member of the Saugerties Fire Department, he was a member of the Exempt Firemen’s Associatio­n.

Survivors include four children, Laurie Myer and her husband Rob, Joseph Staccio and his wife Sharon, Doris Torchia and her husband Michael, and James Staccio and his wife Danielle; and eight grandchild­ren, Melinda, Lauren, Ashley and Jamie Myer, Cheryl Cooper, Jeremy Staccio, and Zachary and Joshua Torchia. He was predecease­d by his sister, Doris Melius, in 2016.

A funeral procession will form at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Buono Funeral Service Inc., and then proceed to St. Joseph’s Church in Glasco, where at noon, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment with full military honors will follow immediatel­y in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery, Barclay Heights. Friends may call Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Buono Funeral Service Inc.
