Park hosts Earth Day event Saturday
KINGSTON, N.Y. » Forsyth Park will host the city’s sixth Kingston Earth Fair on Saturday.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lucas Avenue park, which is home to Forsyth Nature Center. Admission is free.
“Environmental stewardship begins at home,” Kingston Mayor Noble said in a press release announcing the event. “Our Earth Fair offers a variety of activities and demonstrations for attendees to explore the different ways they can protect our environment and often save money at the same time.
“We are fortunate to live in a community made up of individuals, organizations and businesses working to build a resilient and sustainable city,” said Noble, a strong proponent of environmental protectio and a former environmental educator for the city. “This event is yet another example of our community moving together in the right direction.”
Event partners include the Climate Smart Kingston Commission and the group New Yorkers for Clean Power.
“We are so excited to be hosting this great event again, and this year the
event has grown exponentially with an added focus on the home-energy efficiency, retrofits and restoration, historical preservation, housing rehab and financing,” Julie Noble, the city’s environmental educator and stainability coordinator, said in the press release.
“It is so important for the city of Kingston to come together around Earth Day and Arbor Day, to celebrate all of the incredible assets we have in our area and to build environmental stewardship in our community,” Julie Noble, the mayor’s wife, added.
The Earth Fair will feature numerous activities, performances and demonstrations. There will live music and other entertainment; sustainable housing and energy efficiency exhibits and demonstrations; more than 50 “green lifestyle” vendors and exhibitors; and nature-based children’s activities.
There also will be an Earth Day Exchange Store where “gently used” items can be swapped.
Additionally, an electronics collection and recycling
program, sponsored by the Ulster County Resource and Recovery Agency, will be conducted at the fair; rain barrels and home composters will be up for sale; free paper shredding will be offered; and attendees can ride a solar-powered merry-goround.
The event also will feature yoga, a meditation class, bike safety lessons, an electric vehicle display, a bird walk, and an Arbor Day dedication and tree planting.

Also for Earth Day, Tim Guinee of Marbletown, an actor and a leader in former Vice President Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, will give a presentation Sunday about the latest science regarding climate change in the area.
The lecture will being at 3 p.m. at the Ashokan Center in Olivebridge.
A press release about the Sunday event said the Climate Reality Project is a “diverse group of individuals who seek to catalyze a global solution to the climate crisis by supporting urgent action on climate change across every level of society.”
