CHATHAM ‘Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End’ at PS21

-

“Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End,” a staged reading by Nancy Rothman, will be presented Saturday, May 12, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century, 2980 state Route 66, Chatham.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, Bombeck was a widely syndicated columnist. She published 15 books, most of which became best sellers. Her books included “The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank” and “If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?” Among her quotes are “Never lend your car to anyone to whom you have given birth” and Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the ‘Titanic’ who waved off the dessert cart.”

In addition, Bombeck used her fame to support the 1978 women’s Equal Rights Amendment. She

died in 1996 at the age of 69.

Said Rothman in a press release about the onewoman show, “For me, this is a chance to re-enter and reanimate a pivotal time in the lives of many American women. It was often one of her columns that ended up on my mother’s refrigerator.”

Many women, after working throughout World War II, were encouraged to stay at home and raise children. “Outside work conveniently was to be non-intrusive, children’s homework checked, meals on the table and husbands cheered on,” Rothman said. “These women were often desperate for a laugh or at least a compassionate, wry nod.”

Alison and Margaret Engel wrote “Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End” and Harry Rothman will direct.

Added Rothman, “I first performed this play at the Theatre Sounds play-reading series ... in 2017, and it was very well-received. I am thrilled to be able to offer Erma Bombeck’s timeless wisdom and wit to audiences at PS21’s brand new theatre.”
