Area players receive All-State accolades
Pine Plains’ standout Cat Simmons selected to 1st team in Class C by NYS sportswriters
Cat Simmons and Jo Schmidt of Pine Plains and Rondout Valley High’s Tori Decker topped the list of seven area athletes who have been named New York State Sportswriters Association softball All-Stars.
Simmons was named to the first team and Schmidt to the third team in Class C. Decker and fellow Gander Mackenzie Fischer were chosen to the third and fifth teams, respectively, in Class B.
Kingston’s Sydney Bonewit was selected to the seventh team and Roosevelt’s Madchen Knauss the eighth squad in Class AA.
New Paltz pitcher Jill Harrison was a fifth-team choice in Class A.
Simmons, a senior catcher, batted .576 with 35 RBI and 37 runs scored and Schmidt, a junior shortstop, hit .508 with 27 RBI and 10 doubles to lead the Bombers back to the state finals.
Decker, a senior, struck out 65 in 114 innings for Rondout, including shutting out Chester to give the Ganders their first Section 9 title in 13 years. Fischer, a junior center fielder, hit .320.
Bonewit, a junior center fielder, batted .435 with 19 runs and a dozen RBI for Kingstdon. Knauss, a senior,
was 15-4 with only 11 walks issued in 122 innings to lead Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion Roosevelt.
Harrison, a senior, posted a 1.89 ERA and struck out 119 in 88.2 innings for New Paltz.
