Gill nets two Ulster County doubles titles
Karen Gill was a double-winner in the doubles portion of the 69th annual Ulster County Open/Dick Smith Memorial tennis tournament.
Gill teamed with Millie Back to win the open title and teamed with Matt Canzonetti to take the mixed crown.
Gill and Back dropped only three games in three sets and defeated Melissa Bamford and Melissa Germano 6-1, 6-1 for their title. Canzonetti and Gill upended top-seeded Shawn Holzmann and Yvonne Lenzen-Roth 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 for the mixed championship.
Holzmann and Jacek Wojtowicz, the top seeds in the men’s open, lost in the finals as Bill Blake and Ravi Ramaswami rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 triumph.
Franz Kaisik and Ron Kubart topped Rick Lange and David Loewen 6-1, 6-3 for the men’s senior title. Both teams had to win tough semifinal matches to reach the finals. Kaisik and Kubart won a third-set super tiebreak 10-4 to beat Ravi Ramaswami and Tom Turco. Lange and Loewen beat Vic Ricci and Jay Han 7-5, 7-6 (5).
The singles portion of the county tournament begins Thurs-
day with nine matches. Gill, seeded first, will be bidding for a third title. Holzmann is the top seed in the men’s draw with Blake second.
