Roosevelt’s Trainor leads local state qualifiers

FDR’s Trainor wins Class A title, while Coleman captures Class D boys crown

Roosevelt’s Sarah Trainor led 14 local individual­s and one team that qualified for the state championsh­ips.

BEAR MOUNTAIN, N.Y. >> Roosevelt High’s Sarah Trainor topped a list of 14 area individual­s and one team that qualified for the state cross country championsh­ips at Friday’s Section 9 meet at Bear Mountain State Park.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Associatio­n meet is Nov. 10 at Sunken Meadow State Park.

Trainor, the three-time reigning Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion, won the Class A title, covering the 3-mile course in 18:28.44.

John A. Coleman Catholic captured the Class D boys crown, paced by Kyle Mecabe (second, 19:25.56), Colin Leahy (third, 19:27.07), Paul Cornell (seventh, 21:06.01), Jonathan Wright (11th, 21:34.58), Ethan Lee (14th, 21:44.55), Mateo Mercado (18th, 23:10.62) and Joseph

Motta (21st, 24:10.92).

For the first time since becoming a varsity team, the Mount Academy boys’ run of six consecutiv­e titles ended as the Eagles lost to Cornwall 46-54 for the B crown. Travis Meier placed third (16:21.41) to be the only qualifier for the Mount.

New Paltz’s Logan Linares (fifth, 16:22.11) also qualified in B.

Onteora will be sending four runners to states in Class C. Erin Downs (fourth, 21:14.05) and Lucciana Robertson (sixth, 21:36.07) qualified, as did Satch Sumner-Waldman (second, 16:19.41) and Kentaro Mainieri (eighth, 17:31.43). Waldman lost to Tony Njoga of James I. O’Neill by 2.65 seconds.

Coleman is also sending two girls: Toni Sinaga (seventh, 27:00.97) and Anna Larson (ninth, 27:44.76).

Also qualifying for states were Saugerties’ Chloe Hanson (fifth, 19:09.42) and Sheena Dwyer-McNulty of Red Hook (sixth, 19:24.74) in B, Highland’s Benito Vargas (sixth, 17:28.94) in C, plus Ellenville’s Ashlyn Rivera (second, 21:08.69) and Marlboro’s Marie Antonelli (third, 21:08.95), also in C.

O’Neill’s Allison Gash won by 5.5 seconds over Rivera, who defeated Antonelli by a quarter of a second for runnerup.

Kingston closed out its season with the girls placing sixth and the boys eighth in Class A.

Maggie Noe led the Tigers, taking 27th in 21:01.16. She was followed by teammates Morgan Juric (30th, 21:12.66), Kailyn Oreglio (38th, 21:56.40), Marine Nimblette (41st, 22:11.48), Thea Kovaleski (45th, 22:31.24), Hailie TerBush (48th, 23:01.17) and Molly Green (52nd, 23:29.66).

Cameron Fairley placed 40th in 18:21.12 to lead Kingston. Rounding out the unit were Matt Krom (44th, 18:33.20), Luca Maneri (45th, 18:41.82), Andrew Hill (49th, 19:01.08), Facundo Martinez (53rd, 19:14.22), Gabe Bonse (57th, 19:32.05) and Tristan Mochon (58th, 19:34.47).

Reigning MHAL champion Paul Sandford of Roosevelt missed qualifying in A by five seconds, finishing eighth in 16:31.97. The Presidents’ Tito Maresca (16:41.67), Charles Canero (16:47.11) and Nick Moffitt (16:50.86) placed ninth, 10th and 12th, respective­ly.

Top showings for Rondout Valley were Jennifer Callan (12th, 20:15.34) and Dante Catalfomo (35th, 18:48.64) in Class B. For Wallkill, it was Christina Poirier (35th, 22:56.96) and Gregory Marcinik (45th, 19:49.65) in B.

Matt Morgan (22nd, 17:20.25) and Alex Lopez (23rd, 17:21.65) led Saugerties and Red Hook, respective­ly, in B. Claire Holt (20th, 21:46.49) had the best showing for New Paltz in B.

Braxxdon Dawson (12th, 17:50.69), Adrian Cruz (21st, 18:45.24) and Dylan Cale (26th, 19:08.62) had the best performanc­es in Class C for Marlboro, Ellenville and Rhinebeck, respective­ly. Olivia Fajardo (33rd, 27:01.45) led Rhinebeck’s girls.
