Mount Academy returns to state tournament
Mount Academy’s boys soccer team, co-state champions last year, are headed back to the state Class D final four after defeating Fort Ann 2-0 in a regional final at Lansingburgh High.
Glover Winter and Connor Huleatt scored for the (12-3) Eagles on assists from Benson Arnold.
Mount Academy will play Section 5 champion Finney 1:45 next Saturday, Nov. 10, in the state semifinals at Middletown.
Winter connected on a shot to the far post midway through the first half to put the Eagles ahead.
Richie Jones made eight saves in goal for (16-4) Fort Ann, which battled to keep the match tight.
“The Mount defense led by senior centerback Davis Mason was heroic all day, winning 50-50 balls and stonewalling any Fort Ann attack,” Eagles coach Tom Huleatt
said. “Goalkeeper Stuart Boller owned the box and, at 6-foot-4, gobbled up any
aerial attempts.”
Boller finished with three saves.
Mount Academy got the big insurance goal on a breakaway with six minutes remaining. Winter broke through, drew the defense to the end line,
then sent the ball back across the box to Connor Huleatt, who was injured as he scored.
The state Class D championship game is 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Faller Field turf.
