New Paltz leads Section 9 state qualifiers

Abigail Santos and a relay team will represent New Paltz High in two weeks for the state girls swimming and diving championships after qualifying at the Section 9 meet Saturday.

Santos, a senior, won the 50yard freestyle in 24.35 seconds and was third in the butterfly

(57.82) to qualify in both. She also swam anchor on the 200free relay team that included Bella Santos, Lydia Brutvan and Keira Coulard-Smith. The unit placed second in 1:40.19 to also qualify.

New Paltz lost the team title to Pine Bush 282-271.

Rhinebeck sophomore Miya Vitale also made the Nov. 1617 New York State Public High

School Athletic Association meet at Ithaca College in two events. She was second (1:56.14) in the 200-free and third (1:00.28) in the backstroke.

Also earning state berths were Roosevelt junior Catherine Graham, who won the breaststroke in 1:05.14 and Highland sophomore Ashley Benkert, who was second (57.33) in the fly.

Kingston finished eighth out

of the 18 teams with 141 points. The team of Emily McCord, Mackenzie Quinn, Ellie Meyer and Allie Mitchell placed fifth in both the 200- and 400-free relay in 1:42.98 and 3:45.86, respectively.

Meyer had the Tigers’ top individual showing, taking eighth (1:11.29) in the breaststroke.
