New police station is deemed a priority

-

The department has been working in trailers for seven years because of mold in its former headquarters.

TOWN OF ULSTER, N.Y. >> The Town Board has put a new police station on the list of capital improvement priorities for the town.

Town Supervisor James Quigley said the station would be adjacent to the Town Hall’s lower level. The cost is expected to be between $5 million and $6 million, and borrowing will be necessary, Quigley said.

The town Police Department moved from the lower level of the Town Hall to two trailers in the building’s parking lot in November 2011 after department employees said mold was causing breathing problems.

The trailers were replaced in 2016 due to roof leaks.

Other projects in the town’s capital projects plan include:

• Replacing the Ulster Water District’s south tower for $3.6 million.

• Expanding the East Kingston Water District for up to $2 million.

• Improving the Spring Lake Sewer District in two phases for $750,000 each.

• Developing a drainage plan for Katrine Lane for $750,000.

• Extending wastewater lines along Katrine Lane for $750,000.

• Replacing the town’s highway salt shed for $600,000.

• Replacing the Halcyon Park Water District storage tank for $485,000.

• Upgrading control systems for water districts for $250,000.

• Conducting an engineering study of the Ulster Wastewater District for up to $75,000.

The town hopes to secure grants for some of the projects.
