Eagles coach Doug Pederson says he optimistic running back Darren Sproles will play again this season despite suffering a setback with his hamstring injury.

Sproles returned to practice on Wednesday after missing the previous seven games but re-injured his hamstring and won’t play against the Cowboys on Sunday night. Pederson wouldn’t say who will return punts in place of Sproles.

The team released DeAndre Carter, who handled those duties, on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Sproles tore his ACL and broke his arm on the same play last September and missed the rest of the season. He was hoping to play one more season.

Pietro Fittipaldi confirmed as test driver for team Haas

Pietro Fittipaldi will be the test driver for Formula One team Haas starting right after the season-ending grand prix in Abu Dhabi this month.

Fittipaldi said on Friday at his home Brazilian Grand Prix that he aims to race or take part in official practices next season.

This year, Pietro Fittipaldi raced six times for IndyCar team Dale Coyne, finishing 26th overall.

In May, Fittipaldi underwent surgery on his left leg and right ankle after crashing in Belgium at the opening of the world endurance championship.

He said at Interlagos he had recovered.

The 22-year-old Pietro, a grandchild of former F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, will be the second Brazilian test driver in the series, alongside McLaren’s Sergio Sette Camara.

Novak Djokovic says an exhibition match against Rafael Nadal in Saudi Arabia has been called off because the Spaniard underwent ankle surgery.

The top-ranked Djokovic told BBC Sports on Friday that “the match is not happening this year” because of Nadal’s injury.

Djokovic and Nadal had expressed doubt as to whether they would play the Dec. 22 match as Saudi Arabia is under growing pressure from the international community following the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi after he entered Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. He was a Washington Post columnist who had written critically of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince.

The players had not withdrawn, though, saying the invitations were made at least one year ago.
