Observances taking place throughout region today
Veterans Day is Sunday, Nov. 11. Among local observances planned are the following.
• City of Kingston: A ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Common Council chamber at City Hall, 420 Broadway. The guest speaker will be veteran Marty Klein, a Woodstock resident who lost his sight while serving in the Vietnam War. He recently finished creating a documentary called “Why Can’t We Serve.” A free screening of the film, open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building, 708 E. Chester St.
• Esopus: American Legion Post 1298 will hold a service at 11 a.m. Sunday at the veterans monument at the Town Hall, 284 Broadway, Port Ewen. A reception with light refreshments, provided by the St. Remy Reformed Church, will follow in the Town Hall Community Room.
• Hurley: A service sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5086 will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Town Hall, 10 Wamsley Place.
• Hyde Park: A ceremony will take place 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial, 4383 Albany Post Road, sponsored by Hyde Park American Legion Post 1303. U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-Kinderhook, will speak. For more information, call Michael Athanas at (845) 233-5999.
• New Windsor: The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, 374 Temple Hill Road/Route 300, will host a brief ceremony and wreath laying at 2 p.m. Sunday, weather permitting, by the flag poles at the Hall of Honor. At 2:30 p.m., the program will continue in the Hall of Honor program space, with special emphasis on Purple Heart veterans of World War I in this centennial year of the Armistice. Seating is limited for the indoor portion of the program, and reservations are strongly encouraged at (845) 561-1765.
• Olive: American Legion Post 1627 will present a ceremony 2 p.m. Sunday in the Legion Hall on Mountain Road in Ashokan. The event will be inside the building and chairs will be available to attendees. Light refreshments will follow.
• Palenville: At 11 a.m. Sunday, the Palenville Fire Department and Ladies’ Auxiliary will host a short ceremony comprising the national anthem, an invocation, a wreath laying and the playing of taps at the Veterans Memorial Monument, 717 Route 32A. Light refreshments will be served at the fire hall after the ceremony.
• Pine Plains: Veterans of Foreign Wars 5519 will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Pine Plains Memorial Clock, at the center of the hamlet. For more information, call Robert Clinch at (518) 821-7450.
• Plattekill: A service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Thomas Felten Memorial Park, 11 Patura Road, Modena. Refreshments will be served afterward in the Plattekill Town Hall, 1915 U.S. Route 44/state Route 55, Modena.
• Red Hook: A ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park on Albany Post Road, hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7765. For more information, call Richard Wambach at (845) 417-5377.
• Red Hook: The U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Concert Band will play at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson. • Rhinebeck: Observances are scheduled for 10 and 11 a.m. Sunday, respectively, at the Doughboy statue, on East Market Street, and at the Rhinebeck Cemetery, corner of U.S. Route 9 and and Mill Road, hosted by American Legion Post 429 and the Women’s Auxiliary.
