Trainor, Sumner-Waldman finish in top 10 at states
Roosevelt’s Sarah Trainor placed fifth and Satch Sumner-Waldman of Onteora was seventh Saturday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association cross country championships at Sunken Meadow State Park.
Trainor ran the hilly 5-kilometer course in 18:32.4. The junior was 1:30 behind North Rockland ace Katelyn Tuohy, who won the Class A race in 17:02.1.
Sumner-Waldman, a senior, earned his top-10 performance with a 16:53.9 clocking in Class C.
Three area athletes also placed in the top 40, all in Class B. Red Hook’s Sheena Dwyer-McNulty was 21st with a 19:57.5, while Logan Linares of New Paltz finished 26th in with 17:11.8 and Chloe Hanson from Saugerties took 40th in 20:29.7.
John A. Coleman Catholic’s boys, the Section 9 champions, were 10th in Class D. Leading the Statesmen were Cole Leahy, who was 85th in 20:11.8.
The rest of the team ran as a pack: Paul Cornell (114th, 23:20.0), Ethan Lee (114th, 23:20.0), Joseph Motta (116th, 24:18.1), Mateo Mercado (117th, 25:29.0) and Jonathan Wright (118th, 27:33.5).
There were four local entries in the Class C girls race. Onteora’s Erin Downs (21:43.3)
and Lucciana Robertson (22:50.1) were 63rd and 99th, respectively. Ellenville’s Ashlyn Rivera was 101st in 22:57.0, followed by Marie Antonelli of Marlboro at 102nd (23:01.1).
Toni Sinagra (26:57.1) and Anna Larson (29:30.7) were 86th and 100th, respectively, for Coleman in Class D.
Also competing Saturday were Mount Academy’s Travis Meier (61st, 17:51.6) in Class B, and Benito Vargas of Highland (58th, 18:15.9) and Onteora’s Kentaro Mainieri (90th, 19:20.6) in Class C.
