This Christmas, give gift of clean water

Daily Freeman (Kingston, NY) - - OPINION -

Dear Editor: As you probably know, Christmas is all about love, family, kindness, and giving. Around this time of year, most families are celebrating the holiday spirit.

However, the holiday season can be a difficult time of the year for people in need. Many don’t realize that thousands of people are struggling every day to make a living. We, as a society, can help one another. How can we do this? We can help donate or fundraise money for people who are in need of our help by giving to charity as a way of giving a gift. Instead of spending so much money on Christmas gifts, the money can be donated to help people in need.

One in nine people around the world lack clean water. This has become one of the most major global issues that we face. According to the World Health Organization, about 884 million people worldwide don’t have access to safe drinking water. This has resulted in a devastating health crisis due to lack of sanitation, which contributes to spread infections and waterborne diseases.

Many kids suffer from chronic malnutrition because of water and sanitation. About every two minutes, a child dies due to waterborne diseases. In many countries, people have to walk miles to get water. Women are often responsible for collecting the water. This takes time away from work, school and caring for the family. If women and children had access to clean water at home, they would be able to go to school and work and have more household income.

If you could put yourself in these people’s shoes, you would see how devastating their life is. Imagine not having access to clean water and having to walk miles to even get water; not being able to take a shower and live in filth every day. No person should have to live like that, especially around the holidays. We, as a society, can help change a person’s life by donating to water charities. Give differently this season, and help these people who are struggling everyday.

One good place to make a donation is water.org. They have empowered 16 million people with access to safe water and sanitation. Athena Andrews
