Numerous state qualifiers at Section 9 meet

New Paltz, Roosevelt, Rondout Valley and Highland/Marlboro all qualified athletes for the state boys swim championsh­ips Saturday at the Section 9 meet.

New Paltz placed second overall with 249.5 points. MonroeWood­bury dominated with 322.5.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Associatio­n swim championsh­ips are Mar. 1-2 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island.

Leo Kuyl led the way for the Huguenots, winning both freestyle sprint titles. The senior took the 50-yard freestyle in 20.94 seconds, earning All-American considerat­ion, and won the 100 in 46.30.

Kuyl also swam anchor on two victorious relay teams. He teamed with Tadeusz TrzewikQui­nn, Griffin Goldleaf and Sean Geisler to take the medley relay in 1:37.80 and collaborat­ed with Quinn, Geisler and Alex Demis to win the 200-free relay in 1:28.16.

Quinn qualified in two individual events, the butterfly (fourth,

52.99) and the backstroke (second, 53.87).

Roosevelt’s Jack Cimorelli and Robert Reining each qualified for individual events. Cimorelli earned spots by winning the breaststro­ke (58.36) and taking second (1:55.76) in the individual medley. Reining reached in the fly (third, 52.89).

Cimorelli and Reining also qualified for two relays. They teamed with Daniel Burger and Kush Patel in the medley (third, 1:39.47) and with Patel and Ryan Speare in the 200-free (third, 1:29.57).

Rondout Valley junior Bryan Chorzempa swam a 1:45.47 to win the 200-free and qualify for states.

Phillip Sadchikov of Highland/Marlboro earned state berths in both the breaststro­ke (second, 1:00.90) and IM (third, 1:59.79).

Cameron Fairley led Kingston, placing fifth in both the 200 and 500-free races in 1:48.85 and 4:58.66, respective­ly. Mason Delisio was sixth in the 500-free in 5:04.21.
