Clean Sweep event nets 6 tons of debris
The 10th annual Kingston Clean Sweep, held May 4, bagged 2 tons of trash and 4 tons of yard waste in a threehour period, according to co-chairwomen Anna Brett and Julie Jordan.
More than 200 volunteers from 30 local service, business, school and youth organizations swept their was from the railroad crossing on Washington Avenue through the Uptown business district and down the Broadway corridor to the Rondout Creek waterfront.
Several city parks and many sidestreets, especially on the west side of Midtown and in the Rondout area, were cleaned as well.
Filled bags were picked up immediately after the event by Kingston Department of Public Works crews. Those workers weighed the amount of trash and yard waste collected.
Bags and gloves for the event were donated by Herzog’s Home Center, and a grant from Stewart’s Shops helped pay for many other supplies.
Groups and businesses that participated included: Kingston Uptown Business Association; Kingston Lions Club; BARK Youth Program; YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County; Young Ulster Professionals; Kingston Rotary; Friends of the Senate House; Dragon 360; Sanzi Associates; Ulster Savings Bank; Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center; Kingston Catholic School; Ulster Garden Club; Junior League of Kingston; youth group from St. George’s Church; Friends of the Kingston Library; RUPCO; Kingston Boys and Girls Club; Kiwanis; Hudson River Maritime Museum; Friends of Historic Kingston; Ancient Order of Hibernians; Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians; Irish Cultural Center of the Hudson Valley; Children’s Home of Kingston; Kingston Land Trust; Ward 4 community; Center for Creative Education; and Jeff Lowe Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning.
