Longtime coach Gunther Cunningham dies at 72

Longtime NFL coach Gunther Cunningham, who emigrated from postwar Germany as a child and then dedicated his life to football, has died after a brief illness. He was 72.

Cunningham’s wife, Rene, said in a statement that he died Saturday.

Cunningham spoke no English when his family arrived in the U.S., and he was ridiculed for both his accent and ancestry as a child. But he developed into a standout prep football player in California and earned a scholarship to play linebacker at Oregon.

He eventually coached the Ducks along with Arkansas, Stanford and California before spending time in the CFL. He arrived in the NFL as an assistant with the Colts in 1982, then worked with the Chargers and Raiders before making a name for himself with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed quarterback Cody Kessler and brought back offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski.

Kessler gives the Eagles insurance behind Carson Wentz along with third-year pro Nate Sudfeld and rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Thorson. Former backup quarterback Nick Foles signed with the Jaguars in free agency after leading the Eagles to the playoffs the past two seasons following injuries to Wentz.

Kessler has thrown for 2,215 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions, and has a passer rating of 83.7 in 17 games over three seasons. He was 2-2 as a starter in Jacksonville last year and 0-8 with the Browns his rookie season in 2016.

Wisniewski enters his fourth season in Philadelphia and ninth in the NFL.

The Dallas Mavericks say Kristaps Porzingis was involved in an altercation at a nightclub in his native Latvia.

After video showed the 7-foot-3 forward with a bloody forehead, the Mavericks said Sunday: “It is our understanding that Kristaps was jumped and assaulted outside of a club,” without providing further details.

Video of the aftermath of the incident obtained by TMZ showed an agitated Porzingis in a torn shirt, pushing someone out of the way and approaching a group of men before several people stopped him and urged him to calm down.

The 23-year-old Porzingis was acquired by Dallas in a blockbuster deal with the New York Knicks before the trading deadline but hasn’t played for the club.
