Student brought gun to school, police say

Authoritie­s said the weapon was located in Quentin Wiggins’ backpack by security personnel about 7:50a.m. Tuesday.

A Poughkeesp­sie High School student was arrested after trying to bring a handgun into the school on Tuesday, according to city police.

Quentin Wiggins, 19, of Poughkeeps­ie, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, both felonies, police said.

Police said the handgun was located in Wiggins’ backpack by school security about 7:50 a.m. The Poughkeeps­ie Journal reported the gun was loaded.

Poughkeeps­ie Police Department Capt. Richard Wilson said the gun was secured and the suspect was taken to city police headquarte­rs.

The school was placed in lockdown for about an hour after the gun was discovered and while the building was searched.
