Two police officers hurt while making arrests
Two Poughkeepsie police officers were injured Friday night after responding to calls about a fight in progress and a possible home invasion on Thompson Street, the department said.
The incident took place around 8:55 p.m., with uniformed officers, detectives and members of the Neighborhood Recovery Unit responding to the scene. Arriving officers said numerous juveniles fled the area on bicycles. Police located and detained four juveniles at Main and Clinton streets, authorities said.
Authorities said the victim positively identified the four juveniles, who were taken to the city’s Juvenile Aid Bureau.
A detective who remained at the scene on Thompson Street reported that other juveniles involved in the original incident returned to the location. When more police arrived at the scene, the juveniles fled on their bikes, knocking down a bystander, according to authorities. The bystander lost several teeth and suffered cuts and was transported to a local hospital, police said.
Police officers witnessing the incident made additional arrests, during which the two officers were injured, the department said. It added that both officers were treated at a local hospital and released, but will remain out of work pending further medical evaluations.
One of the juveniles arrested was charged with a felony count of attempted burglary, as well as coercion, and was being held pending arraignment. The other juveniles wree released to parents or guardians, pending review and evaluation by the Dutchess County district attorney’s office, the department said.
