Region ready to have a blast on Fourth
There will be food, music and fireworks aplenty as cities, towns celebrate Independence Day
Here’s a rundown of some of the planned Fourth of July celebrations in the Mid-Hudson Valley, based on information provided to the Freeman.
Kingston
The city’s annual Fourth of July celebration is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 4, with live music from 5 to 9 p.m. in T.R. Gallo Park, followed by a fireworks display over the Rondout Creek.
There also will be food vendors, starting at 4 p.m.
The music lineup includes a pop performance at 5 p.m. by Ivory Rose, a 6:30 p.m. arena rock performance by Geezüs Butlers, and an 8 p.m. performance by Mister Kick, featuring dance rock and R&B.
After the musical performances, Kingston Mayor Steve Noble will welcome the crowd at 9:15 p.m., followed by a Color Guard flag presentation and the national anthem. The fireworks display is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.
Fireworks will be launched from the Rondout Creek (Wurts Street) Bridge. The best view will be from lower Broadway and T.R. Gallo Park, between that bridge and the Judge Loughran (Route 9W) Bridge.
The following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic and parking from 1 p.m. to midnight on July 4: Broadway, from Abeel Street to East Strand (both sides); all of West Strand; and East Strand, from Broadway to the municipal parking lot entrance.
The Rondout Creek Bridge also will be closed to traffic.
Also, from 1 p.m. until midnight, there will be no parking on either side of Abeel Street, from Wurts Street to Broadway; and in the first three parking spaces on Broadway from the intersection of Abeel Street (approaching Garraghan Drive) to accommodate the shuttle bus.
There will also be no parking on from 7 a.m. until midnight in the three rows of parking spaces closest to T.R. Gallo Park in the parking lot behind Mariner’s Harbor, at the intersection of West Strand and Dock Street.
Saugerties
Saugerties is holding its annual Fourth of July parade and fireworks on Thursday, July 4.
The parade steps off at 11 a.m. Participants will start lining up on Washington Avenue Extension at 10 a.m. across from Saugerties High School,
extending down toward the Kiwanis Ice Arena.
The parade will proceed down Washington Avenue, cross Main Street, turn right onto Russell Street and then turn right onto Partition Street. At Main Street, the parade will turn left and continue onto Market Street. There will be a viewing stand on Main Street.
An awards ceremony will take place at the large pavilion at Cantine Field following the parade.
Fireworks will be shot off at Cantine Field at approximately
10 p.m.
Clermont
The Clermont State Historic Site will celebrate Independence Day on Thursday, July 4, from 2 to 10 p.m. with a number of Colonial Era activities during the day and live music and a view of the Saugerties fireworks at night.
From 2 to 6 p.m., the site will host experiences from the daily life of the 18th century, including games, musket firings by Revolutionary War reenactors, a visit by George and Martha Washington, a tea party and a seamstress demonstration.
There also will be period-era craft making for
children, storyteller Tom Hanford and the short play “To Be Confined.” Children’s contests throughout the day will include a threelegged race and cherry pit spitting.
A live reading of the Declaration of Independence will begin at 6 p.m.
Clermont staff and volunteers will dress in historic costume while they demonstrate the skills and chores of 18th century life. Classic rock band Willie Amrod Band will perform starting at 7 p.m.
The Saugerties fireworks, visible from across the Hudson River, are to start about 10 p.m.
Admission is $12 per vehicle ($10 for Friends of Clermont
members).
Ellenville
The village of Independence Day celebration starts at noon July 4 and will feature arts, crafts and food and at Liberty Square.
Fireworks will be shot off at 9:30 p.m. at the Joseph Y. Resnick Airport.
Lloyd
The town’s Fourth of July celebration will be from 6 to 10 p.m. July 5 at the town field behind the United Methodist Church, Vineyard Avenue and Main Street, Highland.
There will be food vendors, games, a bounce castle, DJ Reg and fireworks.
New Paltz
The town’s Fourth of July celebration will be from 5 to 11 p.m. July 5 at the Ulster County Fairgrounds, 294 Libertyville Road.
The event will feature food trucks, live music and fireworks. Admission is free. The rain date is July 7.
Plattekill
The town’s Independence Day celebration, featuring music and food, starts at 5 p.m. July 6 at Thomas Felten Memorial Park, 11 Patura Road, Modena.
Fireworks will be shot off at nightfall.
Poughkeepsie
The city of Poughkeepsie’s fireworks display on July 4 can be viewed from the Walkway Over the Hudson.
Admission is $12.50 for the general public, $10 for Walkway members. Tickets can be purchased at www. walkway.org and participating area stores. Children 10 and under get in for free, though registration and tickets are required. Wristbands are required for entrance.
The Walkway will close to the public at 4 p.m., then reopen at 7 p.m. for ticket holders.
The fireworks display will start between 9 and 9:30 p.m.
The rain date is July 5.
