NY, US gasoline prices fall; mixed bag in Mid-Hudson

- Freeman staff

The average price of gasoline fell last week in New York state and the nation, but price changes in the Mid-Hudson Valley were a mix of increases and decreases, Gas Buddy.com said Monday.

Local averages midday Monday were were $2.53 per gallon in Ulster County, down 2 cents from a week earlier; $2.71 in Dutchess County, also down 2 cents; $2.73 in Greene County, up a penny; and $2.79 in Columbia County, up 2 cents.

The statewide average Monday was $2.69 per gallon, down 3.1 cents from a week earlier, GasBuddy reported. The national average fell 2.4 cents per gallon, to $2.63.

“As expected, the national average has reverted to declining in the midst of resolution to refinery issues in the West Coast, while lower demand also weighs on oil prices, leading to modest relief in some areas of the country,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

“While a partial trade deal with China may temporarily interrupt continued relief, the devil will be in the details.” DeHaan added. “... If the latest talk of a trade deal is believed to be more like lipstick on a pig, then I expect gas prices will continue to decline.”

New York state’s average gas price Monday was 3.1 cents per gallon lower than a month earlier and 29 cents lower than a year ago. The national average Monday was 6.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago but still 25.1 cents lower than a year ago.

Over the past five years, the average gasoline price on Oct. 14 in New York state has been: $2.98 per gallon in 2018, $2.67 in 2017, $2.36 in 2016, $2.39 in 2015 and $3.50 in 2014.
