Seven Halloween attraction­s to enjoy

Halloween lovers can choose from a number of Halloween attraction­s and festivals around the Mid Hudson Valley.

Here are seven.

1. Barn of Terror

The popular town of Ulster haunted farm attraction Barn of Terror, featuring a new “Cornmaster” theme, runs through Sunday, Oct. 27

“The farm, including barn, silo, root cellar, mineshaft, cemetery, massive corn maze, field house, shantytown and private roads have been declared a disaster zone.” the attraction’s website said.

Children 15 (or younger) must be accompanie­d by an adult at all times. The Barn of Terror is not recommende­d for children under 13.

The Barn of Terror is an outdoor attraction. Visitors should check the attraction’s Facebook page for schedule changes or closings due to inclement weather.

The Barn of Terror is located at 25 Thruview Farm Road, Lake Katrine. Tickets are $33 online and $37 at the door.

It is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Oct. 27. It opens at 7 p.m. and doesn’t close until no bodies are left.

2. Catskill Mountain Railroad

The Catskill Mountain Railroad in Kingston is offering family-friendly Pumpkin Patch rides, along with spooky “Terror on the Tracks” Halloween trips for teens and adults through Sunday, Oct. 27.

All trains depart from the Westbrook Station at the Hannaford end of Kingston Plaza. They take riders on an approximat­ely eightmile round-trip through the Hurley Flats and parallel to state Route 28.

Or dare to discover what terror lurks along the tracks on the railroad’s Rails of Terror train rides. They take Friday and Saturday nights through Saturday, Oct. 26.

The haunted train will be populated by a spook-tacular cast of the characters, the railroad’s website said.

Rails of Terror is recommende­d for teens and adults.

Pumpkin Express dates are Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Railrs of Terror dates are Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m; Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.; Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.; and Oct. 26 at 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Tickets for the Pumpkin Patch train rides are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, active military personnel and military veterans, and $12 for children ages 2 to 12. Toddlers under age 2 who are sitting on laps will be admitted free.

Tickets for the Rails of Terror haunted train rides are $26 for adults, $24 for seniors, active military personnel and veterans, and $18 for children ages 2 to 12.

3. Old Dutch Church

The Old Dutch Church at 272 Wall St., Kingston, is offering a number of seasonal activities, including “living history” cemetery tours, pumpkin carving and a Halloween concert on the church’s historic organ.

The living history tours give guests a chance to travel back to the 18th century and meet Kingston residents from that time on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.

Guests will move through the cemetery and stop at six gravestone­s to hear the stories of Kingston residents from the colonial era told by actors from the theater troupe Theater on the Road.

Tickets for the cemetery tours are $15 per person, $10 for students, and $1 for children 12 and under. For ticket and reservatio­n informatio­n, call (845) 475-7973.

The church’s pumpkin carving event is on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Carve a pumpkin to take home or leave in the church cemetery for a Saturday night lighting. In the event of rain, the event will take place in Bethany Hall.

Carving tools and pumpkins will be provided, along with free hotdogs and cider.

Then, as part of the weekly Fine Arts Recital Series, the church’s organist, Russel Oliver, will present a free Halloween Pipe Organ Concert on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 12:15 p.m. It will be filled with the spooky sounds of classical pipe organ music. Included will be J.S. Bach’s “Toccata” and “Fugue in D Minor.” There may be some surprise theatrics. Children and adults in costume are welcome to share in the fun. Halloween treats will be provided.

4. Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Houses

Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Houses at 778 Broadway, U.S. Route 9W, Ulster Park, offers spooky hayrides and Halloween attraction­s on a 250-year-old farm through Saturday, Nov. 2.

According to the attraction’s website, Headless Horseman features 65 acres of “foreboding woods, surreal ponds, fruit orchards and more.”

The attraction is not recommende­d for children under 13 and children under 8 are not allowed on any evening hayride, the corn maze or haunted houses. Children 15 (or younger) must be accompanie­d by an adult at all times.

Families with young children can visit during a family-friendly children’s day on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a rain date of Oct. 27.

Tickets for the children’s days are $11.95, plus an online $3.95 service fee and $16.90 on-site. Children under 1 year old are admitted free.

The attraction requests that guests arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled hayride to allow time to check in and proceed to the boarding area.

The remaining regular nights are Oct. 20, 24, 25, 27, 31 and Nov 1 and 2.

Tickets are $41.95, plus a $3.95 service fee, $49.95 on site for non-premium evenings.

Premium evenings are Oct. 19, 26 are $49.95 plus a $3.95 service fee, $58.90 on site.

5. Historic Huguenot Street

Meet the restless spirits from New Paltz’s past as Historic Huguenot Street’s haunted tours return to the historic site through Saturday, Oct. 26.

At nightfall, the historic houses and grounds set the stage for “restless spirits” of real people from the past to tell harrowing stories of how their lives came to a tragic ending and what happened as a result, a press release said.

This year’s tours are rated PG-13. Content may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Tours depart from the DuBois Fort Visitor Center every hour on the hour beginning at 5 p.m., with the last tour stepping off at 9 p.m.

Tours are scheduled for Oct. 24, 25 and 26. The cost is $25 per person, $22 for Historic Huguenot Street members, seniors, and active and retired military personnel.

Then, on Halloween night, children and families are welcome to walk and trick or treat at the historic houses along Huguenot Street on Oct. 31 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. A portion of the street will be closed to traffic while children trick or treat.

6. The Bakery’s Night of 100 Pumpkins

The Night of 100 Pumpkins returns to The Bakery, 13a N. Front St., New Paltz, on Halloween Night, Oct. 31, featuring carved and painted pumpkins created by people of all ages.

Award winners are picked by a panel of artists.

On Halloween night, all the pumpkins are lit and everyone is invited to a special party with free pumpkin bread, cocoa and hot cider accompanie­d by live music.

To enter, carve or paint a pumpkin, bring it to the Bakery on Oct. 30 and write your name and age on the back and fill out an entry form.

7. Woodstock Halloween Celebratio­n

The Woodstock Halloween Celebratio­n returns to the Village Greene at the corner of Tinker Street and Rock City Road at 4 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Known for its unique homemade costumes, the parade first took place in 1991.

The parade features a number of prizes awarded solely to those in homemade costumes.

The streets will be closed from Bread Alone at 22 Mill Hill Road to Tannery Brook Road and Tinker Street.
